If a neighbourhood is on the Danish Ghetto List for a number of consecutive years. It becomes classified as a ‘hard ghetto’. Once an area is classified as a hard ghetto, 60% of the housing can be privatised or demolished under the legislation. As a result, thousands across Denmark have lost their homes. In Mjølnerparken, Copenhagen, after much resistance, the residents of 259 apartments have been evicted, and their former homes privatised. Leaving those who could remain to live for years amid demolition and construction.
Among the grassroots resistance to the mass evictions, many residents crafted banners that, over time, became weathered. This hand-embroidered intervention referencing the traditional ‘Home Sweet Home’ motif was my small contribution to the cause and a reminder of the emotional sanctuary and stability a home should offer.

Hand-embroidered framed textile, 80×100 cm
